Imphal: One person was killed and several others were injured in communal clashes in Manipurโs Thoubal district on Sunday night, prompting authorities to impose an indefinite curfew in the affected areas.
Police officials said on Monday that the violence began about 25 km south of Imphal after residents of one village allegedly threw stones at a night concert in a neighbouring locality.
The clashes escalated, with groups throwing stones at each other and incidents of arson and damage to vehicles and houses reported.
Medical officials said the deceased, identified as Laishram Rakesh, suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died at Thoubal District Hospital.
Several others received treatment for minor injuries sustained during the stone-pelting incidents.
Security forces deployed additional state and central paramilitary personnel to contain the violence. The situation was brought under control by Monday morning.
Thoubal District Magistrate imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
The orders prohibit public movement outside residences in Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham villages to prevent further violence and maintain public order.
