Imphal: Two separate incidents in Manipur‘s Thoubal district claimed two lives within 24 hours, with one involving the mysterious death of a 25-year-old man and the other a fatal road accident that killed a teenage boy and injured another youth.

In the first incident, the body of 25-year-old Sapam Swami was recovered near the Khekman Ningthibi Khong Canal on the morning of July 5. Swami, son of Sapam Khomei and a resident of Leisangthem Kelimakhong, had reportedly left home for work the previous morning but did not return.

Police, accompanied by forensic experts, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. The circumstances surrounding his death have sparked public outrage, prompting local residents to form a Joint Action Committee (JAC).

The JAC, along with the victim’s wife Roshibina, has refused to claim the body, alleging foul play and demanding a government-led investigation into the incident. JAC convenor Sapam Mocha said the committee would not accept the body until those responsible are identified and arrested.

In a separate incident, a 17-year-old boy was killed and another youth injured after a two-wheeler crashed into the rear of a parked vehicle on Asian Highway-1 near Wangjing Toll Tax shortly after midnight.

The deceased, identified as Elangbam Mahesh, son of E. Biren of Heirok Part-II Keithel Maning, was travelling as a pillion rider on a TVS NTORQ scooter. The scooter reportedly collided with the rear of a legally parked Maruti van at around 12:10 am under the jurisdiction of Thoubal Police Station.

Mahesh died on the spot, and his body was shifted to the JNIMS Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

The rider of the scooter, 20-year-old Mayengbam Renedy, son of M. Meneshwor of Laimayum Leikai in Heirok, sustained injuries in the crash and was admitted to JNIMS Hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary police findings, the scooter was travelling from Wangjing towards Thoubal when it rammed into the parked vehicle. Police are investigating both incidents.
