Imphal: A joint team of Imphal West Commandos and security forces arrested an alleged member of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), or NSCN-IM, during a search operation in Imphal West district on Friday, officials said on Saturday.

The operation was conducted at Chingmeirong Tangkhul Avenue under Lamphel police station, where security personnel apprehended 42-year-old MS Chekneichung Chiru, alias Achung Chiru, a resident of Bungte Chiru in Kangpokpi district.

According to officials, security personnel recovered Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, a communication device and documents described as incriminating from his possession.

The arrested individual remains in police custody as further legal proceedings are initiated.

Officials said the arrest was part of intensified counter-insurgency operations being conducted by police and security forces across Manipur to curb unlawful activities.

Security sources said the ongoing operations are also aimed at disrupting alleged extortion networks targeting businesses, professionals, transport operators on highways and members of the public.

Authorities have also raised concerns over alleged involvement of certain individuals linked to groups operating under ceasefire arrangements in activities that could affect the security situation in the state.

Search and combing operations are continuing at various locations across Manipur, with security forces seeking to identify possible links between different groups, recover illegal arms and ammunition and prevent further security-related incidents.
