Agartala: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan died after sustaining a gunshot injury while on duty at a post near Gate No. 52 of Tebaria Border Outpost (BOP) in West Tripura early Thursday. Police and BSF officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident took place at around 5.45 am when the jawan was on duty at the post, according to preliminary information.
The deceased was identified as Nagendra Kumar, a resident of Dosod area in Rajasthan and a member of the 42nd Battalion of the BSF.
According to the preliminary account, Kumar sustained a serious gunshot injury after a bullet was fired from his service rifle. He subsequently died from the injury.
The circumstances leading to the firing remain unclear. Police and BSF officials reached the spot after being informed about the incident and began an investigation.
Officials are examining what happened before the shooting and other circumstances surrounding the death, according to the report.
An issue regarding the jurisdiction of the incident has also emerged. While the location is reportedly under the jurisdiction of Airport police station, a claim has also been made that the spot falls under Lefunga police station.
The investigation is continuing to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances of the incident.
