Imphal: The Manipur Police have arrested a student leader in Imphal East for allegedly working as an operative of the proscribed National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM), according to police authorities.
Waikhom Sena, 24, president of the Imphal East unit of the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), was apprehended by personnel of the Special Commando Unit stationed at Khabeisoi on September 28.
Police identified Sena, a resident of Luwangsangbam Mamang Leikai, as an alleged active operative of the banned outfit. Investigators alleged that he used his position to prepare and circulate propaganda materials and press releases on behalf of the insurgent group through social media platforms and local newspapers.
Authorities also alleged that Sena was involved in unauthorised financial transactions linked to the activities of the outfit.
During a search of his residence, security personnel reportedly recovered Rs 2,67,500 in alleged extortion proceeds, all in Rs 500-denomination notes. An Apple MacBook laptop, which police suspect was used to prepare the group’s press materials, was also seized.
Following the arrest, the MSF’s central leadership announced Sena’s immediate expulsion from the organisation.
In a statement, the student body said his alleged activities had no connection with student welfare and maintained that his reported association with the banned outfit violated the federation’s constitutional rules and regulations.
The MSF further distanced itself from the alleged activities and said the action against Sena was taken in accordance with the organisation’s rules.
