Doomdooma: The Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee staged a protest in Assam’s Diphu on Monday, burning effigies of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters demanded Kumar’s immediate arrest and removal from office.
Held at the Karbi Anglong district headquarters, the protest included a foot march by Congress workers. They started from the KASA gate and marched through Gurudwara, Matipung Tinali and Diphu Market before returning to the starting point.
The protest was part of the Congress’s nationwide campaign against the Chief Election Commissioner.
The party had earlier directed its state units to organise protest marches on September 25 and called for an independent review of decisions and electoral roll changes made during Kumar’s tenure.
The Congress had also asked District Congress Committees to hold similar protests at district headquarters on September 28. Congress workers in Diphu raised slogans during the demonstration.
The campaign centres on Congress allegations about the Election Commission’s handling of electoral roll revisions and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The party has accused the poll panel of undermining voter equality.
Similar protests have been reported in several parts of the country in recent days. In the Northeast, Congress units have also held demonstrations seeking Kumar’s resignation, while party workers in other states have demanded his removal and arrest.
