Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has demanded a special committee to investigate the repeated attacks in Manipur’s border areas.
The demand came after an infiltration on September 24, 2026, when suspected Kuki National Army (Burma) [KNA(B)] militants allegedly entered India and killed four Naga civilians, including a father and son, at Pilong village in Kamjong district.
COCOMI questioned the Central Government’s response to the incident and asked whether it should be treated as an act of external aggression. The committee said it is the responsibility of the Central Government to deal with external threats and protect citizens.
COCOMI also referred to earlier counter-insurgency operations by the Indian armed forces across the Myanmar border after 14 security personnel were ambushed.
The committee questioned why similar action has not been taken when civilians are targeted. It alleged that the Union Government has given little importance to the lives of people in Manipur.
The committee said the September incident was not an isolated case. On May 7, 2026, suspected KNA(B) militants allegedly entered India and attacked the border villages of Namlee, Wanglee and Choro. Several houses were set on fire during the attacks.
Ruling MLA Leishiyo Keishing described both the May and September incidents as acts of external aggression. COCOMI, however, criticised the government for failing to take concrete action.
The committee also questioned the government’s approach of treating the violence as a conflict involving internal elements.
COCOMI said the government’s response to the killings and arson has been ineffective and questioned whether authorities were waiting for the situation to worsen further.
COCOMI said the death toll from the prolonged violence has crossed 300 and criticised the reliance on temporary measures. The committee called for immediate government intervention to protect Manipur and its citizens.
