Imphal: Several Naga student organisations have criticised the reported obstruction of a Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) delegation by personnel of the 39th Assam Rifles at the Avangkhu Checkgate in Nagaland’s Meluri district on September 19.
According to the organisations, the NSF representatives were stopped from crossing into Myanmar despite carrying reference letters for a scheduled cultural exchange intended to strengthen ties between communities on both sides of the border.
The All Zeliangrong Students’ Union (AM) acknowledged the security concerns associated with the international border but said preventing a peaceful civilian delegation from proceeding should be accompanied by a clear explanation.
The Pochury Students’ Union (PSU), whose jurisdiction includes the area where the incident reportedly occurred, sought a written justification for the restriction. The union also questioned the specific directive under which the security personnel allegedly prevented the delegation from proceeding, arguing that security considerations should not automatically restrict civilian movement.
The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) questioned whether the reported restriction was consistent with the official position of the Government of India, referring to the Centre’s recognition of the “unique history” of the Naga people.
Meanwhile, the All Sümi Students’ Union (SKK) and the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) expressed concern that such incidents could affect trust between local communities and security forces.
The student organisations have extended solidarity to the NSF and called for a formal explanation from the authorities. They also urged the government to address matters concerning cross-border engagement through dialogue and established legal procedures.
The organisations said greater institutional clarity was necessary to prevent similar incidents and maintain confidence among Naga communities living along the international border.
