Guwahati: Vehicle checking has been intensified in Meghalaya’s Shillong following several attacks on government and police facilities and incidents of damage to public property.
Police are conducting checks during late-night and early-morning periods at different locations in the city. Both two-wheelers and four-wheelers are being stopped as part of the security measures, while police are also monitoring areas considered vulnerable.
The move comes a day after East Khasi Hills Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Lovish Garg was injured while carrying out a vehicle check at Urkaliar, near Samkhamti Petrol Pump, early Friday.
Police said a scooty with two people on board sped away after the riders were asked to stop and subsequently struck Garg. The incident has led to the registration of an attempted murder case, and the investigation is continuing.
Garg was taken to Woodland Hospital for treatment before being shifted to the HD Unit.
Recent incidents in the city have included alleged petrol-bomb attacks at government offices and police facilities. Some government vehicles were also damaged.
Police are using CCTV footage along with other material collected during their inquiry to trace those allegedly involved.
Authorities have urged people to cooperate with the police during vehicle checks and follow their instructions.
