Bajali: Bajali Congress leader Guptamani Sarma marked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday as “Loafers’ Day” on Thursday, staging a symbolic protest by wearing black and criticising the BJP-led government over issues including floods and rising prices.

Sarma questioned the Centre’s response to the flood situation in the state and alleged that Prime Minister Modi had remained silent on the difficulties faced by flood-affected people.

He also criticised the rise in prices of essential commodities and what he described as the government’s silence on issues affecting the people of Assam.

Sarma took exception to celebrations involving the lighting of earthen lamps to mark the Prime Minister’s birthday, saying that while lamps were being lit for political occasions, families were mourning the deaths of their loved ones.

His remarks came as BJP workers and supporters across the country observed the Prime Minister’s birthday with various programmes.

Sarma said greater attention should be given to issues affecting ordinary people, particularly floods, price rise and the hardships faced by families in Assam.
