Guwahati: Two police personnel posted at Patharkandi Police Station in Sribhumi district have been arrested in connection with an alleged extortion case involving Rs 14 lakh.
According to allegations, a business associate was picked up from Patharkandi Railway Station on September 10 and taken in a police vehicle to the Chandkhira area. The individual was allegedly forced to hand over Rs 14 lakh there.
During the subsequent investigation, the involvement of two police personnel, including a sub-inspector posted at Patharkandi Police Station, reportedly came to light.
Police later arrested Lance Naik Anwar Hussain and Constable Sajal Shuklabaidya in connection with the case.
Police sources said searches were carried out at the residences of the arrested personnel, during which Rs 2 lakh in cash was recovered.
Meanwhile, the alleged involvement of Sub-Inspector M. Nangthaiba Singh is also being investigated. Singh is reportedly absconding, and police have launched efforts to locate and apprehend him.
The arrests have raised concerns in Sribhumi district, with the investigation continuing into the alleged extortion and the whereabouts of the missing money.
