Guwahati: The Meghalaya Government-constituted fact-finding committee on the proposed setting up of Shree Cement Company in East Jaintia Hills has invited representations from individuals, organisations and public to assist its inquiry by September 29.

The committee was constituted through a government notification issued on September 8, following a government directive dated September 3. It has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the disruption of a public hearing held in connection with the proposed project.

The public hearing, convened by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, was scheduled for July 31 in East Jaintia Hills.

Besides examining the events that led to the disruption, the committee will assess the company’s possible environmental, social, legal and criminal implications with regards to the proposed project. Shree Cement is expected to submit a comprehensive fact-finding report to the state government.

As part of the inquiry, the panel may consult different stakeholders and hold discussions with individuals or organisations considered relevant to the matter.

The committee has invited written representations from interested persons, organisations and members of the public. Submissions, in either hard copy or soft copy, must include proper contact details and reach the committee by September 29, 2026.

Physical submissions can be made at Room No. 320, Meghalaya Secretariat, while representations can also be sent by email to [email protected].

Those who wish to present their views before the committee in person will also be allowed to depose during hearings. The dates for such hearings will be announced separately.

The committee is headed by C.V.D. Diengdoh, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya.

The inquiry comes amid continuing concerns and public opposition surrounding the proposed Shree Cement project in East Jaintia Hills. The government has also told the Meghalaya High Court that operations connected with the project are to remain suspended pending the fact-finding exercise.
