Guwahati: India womenโs captain Harmanpreet Kaur scripted history on Saturday, becoming the first cricketer, male or female to lead a team in 150 T20 International matches.
Harmanpreet reached the landmark during Indiaโs Womenโs Asia Cup 2026 Group A match against Pakistan in Dubai. The milestone further cemented her position as one of the most accomplished leaders in the shortest format of international cricket.
The 150th match as captain puts Harmanpreet well ahead of Sri Lankaโs Chamari Athapaththu, who has led in 121 T20Is. Australiaโs Meg Lanning follows with 100 matches, while Englandโs Heather Knight and Rwandaโs Diane Bimenyimana have each captained 96 T20Is.
Harmanpreet has been at the helm of Indiaโs T20I side since 2012 and has become a central figure in the teamโs evolution in the format. Despite the significance of the record, the India skipper played down the personal milestone and stressed the importance of continuing to enjoy the game.
โGreat achievement. But the key is to keep enjoying yourself on the field,โ Harmanpreet said after reaching the landmark.
Her record also places her comfortably ahead of the leading menโs T20I captains. Namibiaโs Gerhard Erasmus holds the menโs record with 91 matches as captain, while former India captain MS Dhoni led the menโs side in 72 T20Is.
The landmark came as India faced Pakistan in their final Group A fixture of the Womenโs Asia Cup. India had already secured a place in the semi-finals after victories over Thailand and Hong Kong, China, and entered the match seeking to complete the group stage with a perfect record.
Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first, with captain Fatima Sana saying her side wanted to put up a strong total before relying on their bowling attack.
Harmanpreetโs latest achievement adds to an already distinguished international career. She has represented India since 2009 and has established herself as one of the longest-serving figures in womenโs international cricket. The ICC lists her as a right-handed batter and off-break bowler with appearances across Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
The 150-T20I captaincy milestone therefore marks another significant chapter in Harmanpreetโs career, placing her alone at the top of the global list for leadership appearances in the format.
