Guwahati: The Congress on September 3 announced the formal termination of its political alliance with the Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal, alleging that the regional party had repeatedly violated the understanding and principles of the opposition grouping.
The decision, effective immediately, was taken on the direction of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Opposition Gaurav Gogoi. APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah subsequently issued an organisational circular communicating the decision.
The Congress said the alliance was established ahead of the previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections with the objective of bringing regional and Left parties, including Raijor Dal, together to form a united opposition against what it described as communal forces.
However, the party alleged that Raijor Dal leaders repeatedly directed criticism and personal attacks at Congress leaders during the period of the alliance. It also accused the regional party of making what it termed “baseless, unwarranted and derogatory” comments against leaders of other parties within the opposition bloc.
According to the Congress, such repeated instances eroded the foundation of the alliance and left the party with no basis to continue its political association with Raijor Dal.
The decision follows a fresh escalation in tensions between the two parties over the past several days.
On Sunday, the APCC had criticised comments made by Akhil Gogoi, accusing the Raijor Dal leader of disregarding the norms of the opposition alliance. During a joint press conference, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur and APCC Media and Communication Department chairman Bedabrat Bora questioned Gogoi’s political conduct and accused him of allegedly acting as a “government agent”.
Bora also defended Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and former Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, highlighting their involvement in flood relief and rehabilitation activities across Assam.
The Congress leader further claimed that Gogoi’s victory from the Sivasagar constituency was aided by Congress support, arguing that he would not have secured the seat without the party’s backing.
Despite ending the alliance, the Congress said it would continue to raise public concerns and scrutinise the BJP-led government over what it described as anti-people policies, injustice and administrative failures.
The political split comes months after the May 2026 Assam Assembly election, in which the BJP emerged as the largest party with 82 seats in the 126-member House. The Congress won 19 seats, while the Bodoland Peoples Front and Asom Gana Parishad secured 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front and Raijor Dal won two seats apiece, while the All India Trinamool Congress secured one seat.
