Imphal: The Naga Tapon Village Authority has demanded immediate security deployment, compensation and an independent investigation after an armed attack on three Liangmai Naga villages in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district left two civilians critically injured and damaged or destroyed several houses and other properties.
The attack took place from around 3.30 am to 12.30 pm on Tuesday in Pipuram Makui, Naga Tapon (Old) and Naga Tapon Namsan (New) villages, according to the village authority. It said firing stopped after Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel arrived in the affected areas.
Pastor Luithuibou Newmai and G. Abonmai, vice-president of Tapon Namsan village, sustained gunshot and other injuries. Newmai was reported to be in critical condition.
The authority said at least 28 houses, multiple trucks, two-wheelers, a JCB, a rice mill and church properties were burnt or badly damaged. Food stocks, granaries, household belongings and other livelihood assets were also destroyed, it said.
The Naga Tapon Village Authority claimed that more than 300 armed militants carried out the attack and questioned the response of local CRPF units. It alleged that security personnel were informed about the assault but reached the affected areas only later.
The authority further alleged that leaders associated with the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF) were involved in planning the attack. The claims could not be independently verified by Northeast Now.
Following the attack, the Village Authority demanded the permanent deployment of security forces inside the affected villages and immediate search operations to locate and arrest those responsible.
It also called for an independent, time-bound investigation into the attack and the alleged involvement of those who planned or coordinated it.
The village authority sought full financial compensation for damaged or destroyed houses, vehicles and other property, as well as losses to livelihoods and income.
It also sought emergency food, medicines and temporary shelter for displaced families, besides specialised medical treatment for Newmai and other injured residents.
