Guwahati: A large female leopard was captured in a cage at No. 1 Nachani Jokai village in Tingkhong on August 29, bringing temporary relief to residents who have been living under the threat of leopard attacks for nearly 18 months.
According to villagers, leopards have been frequently spotted in the village and surrounding areas for about one-and-a-half years. Several livestock, including cattle and goats, have reportedly been killed during this period, triggering growing concerns over the safety of residents.
To prevent further attacks, local youths placed a cage in the village on Saturday afternoon. Within around 30 minutes, a large female leopard entered the trap and was captured.
Forest Department officials later took custody of the animal and made arrangements to release it in a suitable forested area.
However, residents said the danger has not completely subsided, claiming that three other leopards were heard growling and creating panic at another end of the village even after the female leopard was captured.
The villagers have urged the Forest Department to install at least three more cages at strategic locations in the middle and far end of the village to capture the remaining leopards and ensure the safety of the local population.
