Guwahati: A vehicle owned by an Assam Police personnel was allegedly set ablaze near the Upper Lampi Battalion Border Out Post in Boko on Tuesday, raising fresh concern along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The Maruti Alto belonged to Havildar Arbinda Roy of the 28th Battalion and was left outside the camp because the approach road was in poor condition, according to sources.
Police are investigating the possibility that someone deliberately started the fire. The exact cause has not been determined, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether the incident amounts to arson.
An FIR has been registered with the Lampi Border Police Outpost. Investigators are looking into how the fire broke out and the circumstances surrounding the damage.
A forensic team has been sent from Guwahati to inspect the vehicle and collect evidence. SP Jan Kishore Gogoi and other senior police officials are also expected to visit the area and review the situation.
Recent incidents on the outskirts of Shillong and protests at Jorabat have affected the situation along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Investigators are also looking into possible involvement by miscreants. No evidence linking them to the incident has been found.
