Guwahati: The Konyak Union (KU) and the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) have agreed to resolve border-related and other bilateral issues through direct dialogue, ruling out the involvement of any third-party organisation.
The decision was taken at a joint meeting in Sivasagar, Assam, on August 22, where representatives of the two organisations reaffirmed the historical and fraternal ties between the Konyak and Tai Ahom communities.
The meeting also resolved to form a Peace Committee to prevent misunderstandings, maintain communication and help settle any future disputes through peaceful means.
KU Press and Media Secretary Kaibo Konyak said the meeting unanimously agreed that any border-related matter or other issue between the two communities would be addressed directly by the Konyak Union and ATASU.
The organisations said such discussions would be conducted in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, without the involvement of any outside organisation.
The proposed Peace Committee will comprise representatives from the two organisations and will focus on maintaining regular communication, strengthening mutual understanding and facilitating dialogue whenever concerns arise.
The joint meeting also expressed concern over recent natural disasters, including landslides and floods in Nagaland’s Mon district and parts of Assam.
The two organisations urged the governments of Assam and Nagaland to carry out scientific and technical assessments to determine the causes and contributing factors behind the disasters.
They also called for preventive measures, scientific planning and long-term environmental management to reduce the risk and impact of similar disasters in the future.
The Konyak Union and ATASU reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between the two communities and promoting peace, harmony and sustainable development in the region.
Representatives from the ATASU Sivasagar and Charaideo district committees, their respective women’s councils, Konyak Union headquarters in Mon, Konyak Students’ Union headquarters in Mon, and Konyak Mother Association headquarters in Mon attended the meeting.
