Imphal: An Assam Rifles patrol team came under attack by unidentified armed individuals near the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district early Sunday, leaving security personnel injured, police sources said on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 4 am as the patrol was moving through the rugged area between Yangoupokpi and Charingphei villages.
According to officials, the attackers triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) targeting the moving patrol. The blast was followed by gunfire, prompting the security personnel to take tactical positions and retaliate.
The attackers reportedly used the dense vegetation and difficult terrain to escape from the area following the exchange of fire.
The injured personnel were provided immediate medical assistance before being evacuated to a military medical facility for further treatment.
Security forces subsequently deployed additional personnel to the border sector and launched a large-scale search and cordon operation to trace those involved in the attack.
Authorities have not yet identified the attackers or confirmed their affiliation with any particular militant or insurgent group.
The incident has renewed concerns over security along Manipur’s international border, where difficult terrain and cross-border movement continue to pose challenges for security forces conducting patrols and counter-insurgency operations.
