Doomdooma: Concerns over the alleged use of Assam’s Dima Hasao district as a transit route for drug peddlers have resurfaced following the death of Assam Police sub-inspector Nabajit Das, who was killed in the line of duty at Laisong on August 14.

Former Cabinet Minister and Congress leader Nandita Gorlosa on Wednesday said the incident highlights the risks faced by law-enforcement personnel while combating drug trafficking and its wider impact on communities.

“A dedicated officer, Nabajit Das from Udalguri district, lost his life in the line of duty. The incident, which occurred on August 14 in Laisong, raises serious concerns about drug peddling. It has become evident that Dima Hasao district serves as a transit route for drug peddlers, with tragic consequences. Our teenagers are the victims in this scenario,” Gorlosa said.

According to Gorlosa, following the incident, there was a belief that drug peddlers may have taken a route towards Tamenglong via Mahur.

She said Das’s death should serve as a warning to young people about the risks associated with the drug trade.

“The drug peddlers who were detained should be punished strictly. We as citizens should also be more vigilant in the interior areas,” Gorlosa said, calling for greater public vigilance in remote areas.

Gorlosa also paid tribute to Das and expressed solidarity with his bereaved family.

“May his courageous sacrifice serve as an example for our youth, demonstrating the risks taken for their well-being,” she added.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to the alleged movement of drug consignments through interior areas of the hill district and the challenges faced by security personnel in tackling the illegal trade.
