Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday condemned the August 14 militant ambush at Langka Naga village in Kangpokpi district, in which two Naga civilians were killed and two others injured.
The victims were identified as 34-year-old Wiriliangbou Chawang and 55-year-old Kawidinang Abonmai. Speaking at the 80th Independence Day celebrations in Imphal, Khemchand described the attack as a serious setback to efforts to restore peace and urged communities across Manipur to reject violence and division.
The Chief Minister said lasting peace cannot be established through force alone and stressed the importance of rebuilding trust among communities. He said social justice, respect for individual dignity and participation from all sections of society would be essential for achieving lasting stability in the state.
Khemchand also acknowledged the support of the Central Government in addressing Manipur’s security and developmental challenges. He appealed to citizens to work collectively towards reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
Highlighting steps taken to strengthen law enforcement and public safety, the Chief Minister said 477 newly procured vehicles had been handed over to the Manipur Police Department to improve its operational mobility.
He also launched the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS)-112 across the state, providing a unified platform for citizens seeking emergency assistance.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the Manipur Police Museum, which will document the history and service of the state police force. He also announced the establishment of a Special NIA Court in Thoubal district and the launch of the Nodera Emergency Response Application in Noney to improve localised emergency reporting.
Reflecting on India’s 80th Independence Day, Khemchand paid tribute to freedom fighters and historical figures whose sacrifices contributed to the country’s independence.
He linked Manipur’s development goals with the broader national growth agenda, highlighting progress in infrastructure, domestic manufacturing and innovation.
In his concluding remarks, the Chief Minister said initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Digital India have contributed to employment generation, expansion of indigenous manufacturing and improved access to public services and digital financial systems.
