Guwahati: Classes in flood-affected schools across Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo are likely to resume after August 15, once floodwaters recede and the campuses are cleaned and restored, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said.
Pegu said more than 150 schools in the affected districts are still either submerged or dealing with the impact of floodwaters, mud and silt.
While some school campuses remain under water, others have been left covered with mud and silt as floodwaters recede. The condition of several schools has made it difficult for regular classes to restart immediately.
The education department is assessing the damage and will begin restoration and cleaning work at the affected institutions before students return, the minister said.
The decision comes as parts of Upper Assam continue to face the effects of flooding, with waterlogging and damage to school infrastructure disrupting normal academic activities.
Pegu said the reopening of the affected schools would depend on the condition of individual campuses and the progress of restoration work after August 15.
Flood-affected communities in Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo are still recovering from the deluge, with several areas yet to return to normal.
