Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 10 visited Guwahati Science City in Sonapur to take stock of ongoing construction and review plans for its next phase.
The Science City, spread over more than 150 bighas, is currently undergoing additional development work following its formal inauguration earlier this year. Sarma said he hoped the entire project would be completed by March 2027.
The Chief Minister announced that the state government would provide an additional Rs 100 crore for infrastructure and facilities aimed at improving the experience for visitors.
The proposed facilities include a digital panorama, convention centre, musical fountain and additional parking, along with other infrastructure. The project is being jointly implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Assam’s Department of Science and Technology.
Sarma said the government wants to develop Guwahati Science City into one of the country’s best science cities. He also urged people, especially school and college students, to visit the facility and explore its attractions.
To make the Science City easier to reach, the government is also considering a dedicated Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus service connecting Guwahati with the site.
Science and Technology Minister Keshab Mahanta, Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika, Food and Public Distribution Minister Kaushik Rai and senior officials accompanied Sarma during the visit.
The Chief Minister later visited ‘Zubeen Khetra’ in Komarkuchi, Sonapur, where a memorial is being developed in honour of thelate Assamese singer and artiste Zubeen Garg.
Sarma reviewed the construction progress with Public Works Department officials and the project architect and directed them to complete the memorial’s boundary wall at the earliest. He said this would allow other planned works, including an open-air theatre and landscaping, to begin without further delay.
