Imphal: The newly formed Kuki Youth Organisation (KYO) has urged caution following Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh’s announcement on free movement along highways during his visit to Kangpokpi on August 8.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the organisation said civilian safety and existing security protocols should take precedence over unilateral political announcements regarding movement along sensitive routes.
KYO claimed that declarations of unrestricted travel without coordination with security agencies could create confusion and potentially put civilians at risk. It urged individuals and groups not to bypass established security arrangements or enter sensitive buffer zones without official clearance.
The organisation further said any alleged violations of buffer zones or incidents that could trigger tensions should be addressed through established legal and security mechanisms rather than through direct confrontation.
KYO appealed to the Meitei, Kuki and Tangkhul communities to continue following existing security protocols and avoid actions that could contribute to renewed tensions in the state.
The group also called on community leaders to carefully assess the implications of ongoing political discussions, particularly in relation to the long-term safety and rights of the Kuki population.
Referring to more than three years of conflict, KYO said the displacement of families, loss of lives and episodes of violence must be taken into account in any effort to restore peace.
According to the organisation, sustainable peace would require mutual respect, credible safety guarantees and transparent confidence-building measures rather than what it described as rushed policy decisions.
KYO maintained that any move towards greater freedom of movement should be accompanied by adequate security arrangements and coordination among the communities and authorities concerned.
