Imphal: Two people were killed and three others seriously injured in a road accident on Tiddim Road at Utlou Koubiliya Makhong near Imphal Airport. Police later arrested the truck driver, who had fled the scene, after tracing his movements using CCTV footage.
According to police, the accident involved a commercial truck bearing registration number NL07AA-5416, which was allegedly being driven at high speed and in a reckless manner. Preliminary investigations indicate that rash driving led to the fatal collision on the busy stretch of road.
Two victims died on the spot, while three others sustained serious injuries and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition is being closely monitored by doctors, officials said.Following the accident, the truck driver allegedly fled the scene in an attempt to avoid arrest. Investigators subsequently examined CCTV footage from cameras installed along Tiddim Road to reconstruct the vehicle’s movements and identify the suspect.
The surveillance footage enabled police to track the vehicle’s route and establish the sequence of events leading up to and following the crash. Based on the evidence collected during the investigation, Manipur Police arrested the driver, identified as Kshetrimayum Toni Singh (35), a resident of Huidrom Awang Leikai, Pungdongbam, under Lamlai Police Station.
Police said the accused remains in custody, and legal proceedings have been initiated. The investigation is continuing.
Following the incident, traffic authorities once again urged motorists to follow speed limits and drive responsibly, particularly on major highways such as Tiddim Road, to prevent similar accidents.
