Imphal: A joint team of central and state security forces arrested the self-styled army chief of the proscribed United National Kuki Army-Hmar (UNKA-Hmar) from Churachandpur district and recovered a cache of arms and explosives based on his disclosure, Manipur Police said on Thursday.
The arrested individual was identified as RC Singson, a resident of Old Gelmol village under Churachandpur Police Station. He was apprehended on August 5 during a security operation.
Acting on information provided by the accused during interrogation, personnel of the 5 Assam Rifles, assisted by state police, recovered an AK-47 rifle with a magazine, a 9 mm pistol with a magazine, three improvised explosive devices (IEDs), two Baofeng radio sets and a smartphone from a forested area near Thingchawm village.
Police said a case has been registered at Churachandpur Police Station under FIR No. 79(08)2026, invoking relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
Further investigation is underway.
The accused and the seized items have been handed over to the concerned police station for further legal proceedings, police added.
The UNKA is a non-Suspension of Operations (SoO) group. Under the SoO framework, the Ministry of Home Affairs maintains a tripartite peace agreement with selected Kuki insurgent groups operating along the Manipur-Myanmar border.
