Guwahati: Two of Assam’s biggest recent drug seizures, including 80,000 Yaba tablets in Sribhumi district and 669.734 kg of ganja concealed in cargo parcels at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, were among the major cases reviewed as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and multiple enforcement agencies stepped up efforts to dismantle organised drug trafficking networks in the state.
The cases were reviewed during the second-quarter meeting of the State-Level Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) for 2026, convened by the NCB in Guwahati and chaired by Deputy Director General (North Eastern Region) R. Sudhakar.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Assam Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), Customs, CGST, Income Tax Department, Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), National Investigation Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Drug Controller, Assam Rifles, BSF and ITBP. District Superintendents of Police also participated virtually.
A key focus of the meeting was tracking the financial networks behind drug trafficking. Officials stressed that financial investigations should become an integral part of every NDPS case to identify and dismantle organised syndicates rather than merely arresting couriers.
Among the major cases discussed was the seizure of 80,000 Yaba tablets in Sribhumi district, which led to the arrest of three persons. Officials also reviewed the recovery of 669.734 kg of ganja concealed in 111 cargo parcels at Guwahati airport, in which five accused were arrested.
The agencies also examined emerging trafficking routes, the growing use of logistics and cargo networks for transporting narcotics, and the deployment of handheld baggage screening devices to strengthen anti-drug surveillance across the railway network.
The meeting further discussed strengthening the Assam Anti-Narcotics Task Force on the lines of the NCB’s operational model to improve intelligence gathering and inter-agency coordination.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participating agencies resolved to enhance joint interrogations, real-time intelligence sharing, financial investigations and coordinated enforcement operations to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates and their financial networks. They also reaffirmed their commitment to achieving the goal of a Drug-Free Assam and Drug-Free India.
