Guwahati: Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has raised objections after spotting an inaccurate map of India printed on paper napkins at a popular Indian restaurant in Glasgow, saying the country’s Northeastern region had been left out of the depiction.
The incident came to light during the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2026 when members of the Indian boxing team visited Mister Singh’s India-The Home of Curry after concluding their campaign at the Games. The restaurant reportedly served paper napkins featuring an outline map of India that omitted the Northeast.
Expressing her disappointment, the Assam boxer said every part of the country deserves equal recognition.
“The map on the napkins is missing our Northeast. Every part of India is important and should be represented,” Lovlina said.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) immediately took up the issue, describing the depiction as unacceptable and raising the matter with the restaurant management as well as the local authorities.
According to BFI officials, members of the Indian delegation also noticed that the map excluded the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, raising concerns over the inaccurate representation of India’s territorial boundaries.
BFI officials, along with Lovlina, formally objected to the design and urged the restaurant to withdraw the printed napkins. They said any incorrect depiction of India’s map was unacceptable, especially during an international sporting event where Indian athletes were representing the country.
The omission of the Northeast drew particular concern as several members of India’s boxing squad, including Lovlina, come from the region.
The controversy comes just days after Lovlina clinched the silver medal in the women’s 70kg boxing event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, adding another international medal to her achievements.
