Nazira: ONGC has come forward to assist in the restoration and rehabilitation of schools and other educational institutions damaged by the recent devastating floods in Assam’s Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
Nazira-based ONGC Assam Asset has, in principle, decided to undertake the initiative under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) programmes.
The public sector undertaking (PSU) is expected to work in coordination with the Government of Assam and the district administrations to identify educational institutions for assistance, subject to statutory approvals and budgetary provisions. The company has already conveyed its commitment to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Talking to reporters after distributing essential food items and medicines among flood-affected families at Ghilaguri in Betbari, Sivasagar, on Thursday, ONGC Assam Asset Manager Uday Paswan said the company was committed to supporting the restoration and rehabilitation of educational institutions affected by the floods. He said ONGC had assured the Assam Chief Minister of its support and would extend full cooperation to the state government.
Paswan also said ONGC Assam Asset had itself suffered extensive losses due to the floods. Although the PSU’s operations are yet to return to normal following the inundation of the Sivasagar and Nazira regions, the company has continued to stand by flood-affected people with a sense of responsibility during the crisis, he said.
“ONGC would continue extending assistance to the affected communities in the days ahead. The floods disrupted the lives of hundreds of families residing in ONGC’s residential colonies at Sivasagar, Nazira and Lakwa, besides adversely affecting the PSU’s drilling and production activities.
Despite these challenges, ONGC has continued its relief operations, distributing essential supplies to thousands of flood-affected people across the two districts,” Paswan said.
Relief materials were distributed at Betbari and several other locations in Sivasagar on Thursday as part of ONGC’s ongoing humanitarian efforts.
