Guwahati: Four members of a family went missing after they were swept away by floodwaters in Assam’s Charaideo district as sudden flooding inundated Lakuba Abhayapuriya village under Tengapukhuri Police Station on Sunday evening.
According to local residents, floodwaters entered the house of Rohini Dubara, forcing the family to leave their home and move to a nearby higher area. While crossing a road submerged by floodwaters, Rohini Dubara’s wife, Tutumoni Dubara, and daughter, Bidisha Dubara, were swept away by the strong current.
After learning about the incident, Rohini Dubara’s two sons, Bidyut Dubara and Biplab Dubara, entered the floodwaters in an attempt to rescue them. However, both were also swept away by the current.
The incident occurred at around 7 pm on Sunday.
Family members said they immediately contacted the emergency helpline issued by the district administration but did not receive any response. They later informed Charaideo Deputy Commissioner Neha Yadav over the phone, who assured them that a rescue team would be sent.
However, local residents alleged that no rescue personnel from the district administration or police had reached the village until 1 pm on Monday.
The incident has sparked anger among villagers, who questioned the delay in the rescue response. The disappearance of four members of the same family has also triggered concern across the area.
