Guwahati: Heavy rainfall has caused widespread devastation across Nagaland, with flash floods and landslides claiming nine lives and leaving four people missing, according to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).
Rescue teams are continuing search operations for those reported missing as several parts of the state remain affected by the impact of incessant rains.
All nine fatalities have been reported from Mon district, where five people lost their lives after a landslide struck Mon town. In another incident at Naginimora, rescue personnel managed to save four people who were swept away by floodwaters.
The disaster has affected more than 7,460 people across 10 districts of Nagaland. Shamator district has witnessed the worst impact, with nearly 7,000 residents affected due to major landslides.
Initial assessments indicate that at least 64 houses across 93 villages have suffered damage. The floods and landslides have also resulted in the loss of over 80 livestock, including cattle, pigs and indigenous mithuns.
Several roads, public infrastructure facilities and agricultural areas have been damaged, with officials expecting the extent of losses to increase as assessment work continues.
Authorities have advised people living in vulnerable locations, especially landslide-prone and low-lying areas, to remain cautious as rainfall continues to affect normal life and relief teams carry out ground assessments.
