Agartala: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag , an IPS officer, was found dead in his office at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on Monday, July 20, in what is suspected to be a suicide case.

According to sources, Dhankar was found unconscious in the bathroom of his chamber at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) before being rushed to the hospital around noon. While some media reports have claimed it to be a suspected suicide, neither the Tripura Police nor the state administration has issued an official statement confirming the circumstances of his death.

Doctors at GB Pant Hospital said Dhankar was brought to the emergency department in an unresponsive condition with no detectable pulse or blood pressure.

“We immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation after his arrival. Despite continuous efforts for 48 minutes, there was no response, and he was declared dead at 12:48 pm,” said Dr Bhowmik.

The doctor added that Dhankar showed no signs of life when he was brought to the hospital and that the post-mortem examination would determine the exact cause of death.

Following the incident, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, West Tripura District Magistrate Vishal Kumar and other senior officials reached GB Pant Hospital.

Sources said the deceased officer’s son is travelling to Agartala.

Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also visited the hospital after the news emerged.

Demanding a judicial inquiry, Choudhury described Dhankar as “one of the most honest and sincere officers” of the Tripura Police and called for an investigation under the supervision of a sitting judge of the High Court.

“Even if it is a case of suicide, the circumstances that led to such a tragic incident must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha was also on his way to the hospital.

Further official details are awaited.
