Guwahati: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday launched an indefinite hunger strike after Delhi Police removed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest and admitted him to hospital, citing his worsening health.

Dipke announced the decision in a post on X, saying his indefinite fast had begun with immediate effect.

The announcement followed a statement from the New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police’s office, which said Wangchuk was shifted to hospital for “essential medical care” based on medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

Dipke alleged that Delhi Police assaulted and detained him while clearing the protest site at Jantar Mantar. The police, however, urged those gathered at the venue to disperse peacefully.

Wangchuk had been observing an indefinite hunger strike for the past 21 days, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination.

He has also been calling for broader reforms in the examination system.

Former AISA president N. Sai Balaji said three members of the CPI(ML) Liberation’s All India Students’ Association (AISA), Neha, Aameen and Manish, would continue their fast at Jantar Mantar as the protest entered its 21st day.
