FIFA World Cup 2026
Argentina staged a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over England to reach the FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Spain.

Guwahati: Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat England 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal on Wednesday, securing their place in the final where they will face Spain.

England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, who finished a well-worked move after being set up by Morgan Rogers. Thomas Tuchelโ€™s side looked on course for a place in their first World Cup final since 1966 as they held their advantage for much of the second half.

However, Argentina responded with a late surge. Midfielder Enzo Fernรกndez equalised in the 86th minute, shifting the momentum in favour of the defending champions.

With the match heading towards extra time, substitute Lautaro Martรญnez scored the decisive goal in stoppage time, heading home from a Lionel Messi cross to seal a dramatic victory and spark celebrations among the Argentine supporters.

Messi, captaining Argentina in what is expected to be his final FIFA World Cup, played a pivotal role in the comeback, providing the assist for the winning goal as Lionel Scaloniโ€™s side booked a second consecutive World Cup final appearance.

England, meanwhile, were left to rue missed opportunities and a cautious approach after taking the lead. Despite an organised defensive display for most of the match, the Three Lions were unable to withstand Argentinaโ€™s sustained pressure in the closing stages.

Argentina will now face Spain in the FIFA World Cup final on Sunday after the European side defeated France 2-0 in the other semifinal. England will meet France in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
