Guwahati: A deadly explosion targeting an Assam Rifles convoy in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district claimed the lives of three personnel and left several others injured on Monday (July 13), as security forces launched an extensive operation to track down those behind the attack.

The incident took place near Sokhuvi village, where the convoy was travelling through the area. Initial reports indicate that unidentified assailants targeted the security vehicle with an improvised explosive device (IED), causing a powerful blast.

The injured personnel were rushed to medical facilities for treatment, while officials have yet to disclose their condition.

The attack is the second IED-related strike on security forces reported from Chumoukedima district within a week, adding to concerns over renewed militant activity in the region.

Retired Army officer and Kirti Chakra awardee Major Digvijay Singh Rawat alleged in a post on X that the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) [NSCN-IM] was behind the attack.

He further claimed that the outfit had earlier joined hands with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in carrying out ambushes on security personnel.

Citing the incident on X, Rawat alleged, “Second IED blast within a week by NSCN(IM) over Assam Rifles convoy at Chumoukedima, Nagaland. ULFA & NSCN have been working together in many ambushes in past over security forces.”

Authorities, however, have not attributed the attack to any insurgent organisation, and no group has so far come forward to claim responsibility.

Soon after the explosion, teams from the Assam Rifles and Dimapur Police began coordinated search operations across the surrounding area. Security has also been tightened as the investigation continues.

Officials said more information is expected once the inquiry advances.
