Arunachal Youth Congress opposes naming Naharlagun road after Syama Prasad Mookerjee, urging recognition of local icons instead.

Guwahati: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has objected to the Arunachal Pradesh government’s decision to name a newly built road in Naharlagun after Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, saying public assets should honour personalities who have made significant contributions to the state rather than be used for political messaging.

In a statement released on Tuesday, IYC National General Secretary Tarh Johny criticised the BJP-led government for naming the road connecting Damsite and Model Village after the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He maintained that infrastructure developed with public funds should reflect the history, culture and legacy of Arunachal Pradesh.

According to Johny, the decision overlooks several distinguished personalities from the state who have played pivotal roles in its growth and development. He named leaders such as Moje Riba, Matmur Jamoh, Dr Bengia Tolum, Talom Rukbo, Gegong Apang, Dorjee Khandu and Kalikho Pul, saying their contributions to Arunachal Pradesh deserve greater recognition.

He also accused the government of giving precedence to symbolic issues while key public concerns remain unresolved. Johny said the administration should instead concentrate on tackling unemployment, strengthening healthcare and education systems, and improving rural infrastructure.

The Youth Congress leader further called for a transparent mechanism for naming public infrastructure. He suggested that historians, indigenous bodies, civil society organisations, public representatives and residents should be consulted to ensure such decisions are inclusive and reflect the aspirations of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
