Guwahati: Assam‘s Ankita Konwar has created history by becoming the first Assamese woman and the first woman from Northeast India to successfully swim across the English Channel as part of an international relay team, completing the grueling challenge in nearly 13 hours.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s most demanding open-water swimming routes, the English Channel separates England and France and is known for its freezing temperatures, strong currents, unpredictable tides and rapidly changing weather conditions. Completing the crossing is considered one of the highest accomplishments in endurance sports.
Konwar’s achievement is all the more remarkable considering she took up swimming only three years ago. Since then, she has rapidly emerged as one of India’s leading endurance athletes, completing a Full Ironman in Barcelona, the demanding T100 Triathlon in Dubai, and now adding the prestigious English Channel crossing to her list of accomplishments.
Reflecting on the achievement, Konwar described the English Channel as more than just a swimming challenge.
“The English Channel is far more than a swim-it’s a journey of resilience, teamwork and trusting yourself when nature tests every ounce of your spirit,” she said after completing the crossing.
Expressing pride in representing her home state and the region, she added, “Carrying the Indian flag while representing Assam and the Northeast is an honour I will cherish forever. If someone like me, who wasn’t even a swimmer once, can stand here today, then anything is possible with consistency and courage.”
Konwar said she hopes her journey encourages more women and young athletes to dream big, overcome self-doubt and pursue challenges that once seemed impossible.
Her latest accomplishment marks another milestone in an inspiring endurance career that has motivated fitness enthusiasts across the country. From taking up swimming only a few years ago to conquering one of the world’s toughest open-water challenges, Konwar’s journey stands as a testament to perseverance, determination and unwavering commitment.
With the English Channel crossing now added to her list of achievements, the Assam athlete says she is already preparing for her next endurance challenge.
