Manipur Police arrested two suspects and seized over 84 grams of suspected heroin during a joint operation in Thoubal.

Imphal: The Anti-Narcotics Squad of the Manipur Police, in coordination with central security forces, arrested two alleged drug peddlers and seized suspected heroin during a joint operation in Thoubal district, police said on Saturday.

According to the Manipur Police’s morning bulletin, the two accused were apprehended from their respective residences during the operation.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Sahid Rahman (31), a resident of Lilong Ushoipokpi Tharaorok under Lilong Police Station, from whose possession 45 grams of suspected heroin was recovered, and Md Salauddin alias Imuba (38) of Sangaiyumpham Nungphou Mathak Leikai under Thoubal Police Station, from whom police seized 39.11 grams of suspected heroin.

Police said both accused, along with the seized contraband, have been taken into custody. Separate First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2023, and further investigation is underway.

The arrests coincided with the state’s observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday.

To mark the occasion, the Manipur Police organised a series of awareness programmes across the state. A 10-km anti-drug awareness run held in Imphal witnessed the participation of more than 1,640 people. District police units, the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB), the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and armed battalions also conducted bike rallies and awareness campaigns in schools and public places to promote the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
