Guwahati: A complaint alleging kidnapping, wrongful confinement, assault and extortion inside a sports club in Guwahati has been filed with the city police, with the complainant claiming he was held captive for nearly four hours by a group of 25 to 30 people.
The complainant, Noman Dewan, a resident of Fancy Bazar and an active Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, alleged that the incident took place at Break Point Sports Club near Nehru Stadium on B. Barooah College Road on June 21.
In his complaint, Dewan alleged that he was unlawfully confined inside the club premises and subjected to physical and mental assault. He named Anil Basfor, Pawan Basfor, Manjeet Basfor and Suhel Basfor as the main accused.
According to the complaint, the accused assaulted him and demanded money while he was being held captive. Dewan alleged that the incident stemmed from a dispute dating back nearly four years.
He further claimed that he was rescued only after his father approached the authorities for help.
Dewan lodged a complaint at Pan Bazar Police Station on June 22. The case was later transferred to Paltan Bazar Police Station after he was informed that the incident fell under its jurisdiction.
The complainant alleged that no significant action has been taken against the accused despite the complaint. He and his family also claimed they have continued to receive death threats from those allegedly involved.
Dewan is associated with the BJP and has participated in political activities and election campaigns for Central Guwahati MLA Vijay Gupta.
Police are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations or confirm the status of the investigation.
