Doomdooma: Amid growing public concern over chemically ripened mangoes sold in markets, naturally tree-ripened mangoes from Assam’s Dima Hasao district are drawing attention for their taste and quality.
Roadside vendors in Haflong are selling locally grown mangoes, which many consumers say are sweeter and more flavourful than chemically ripened fruits transported from outside the state.
Local Congress leader Nandita Gorlosa said, “While travelling, I met Ayung, a mango vendor, and found both varieties to be absolutely delightful – sweet, fleshy, and full of flavour. In light of reports about chemical ripening, the locally sourced, natural mangoes are undoubtedly superior. From roadside to platesโฆ.!!!”
Local vendor Ayung said customers often return after tasting the fruits.
“People who taste our mangoes always come back. These fruits ripen naturally on the trees and their flavour speaks for itself,” Ayung said.
The district produces several indigenous seedling mangoes as well as locally cultivated Bombay (Bombai), Langra, Himsagar and Amrapali varieties. Many villages also grow traditional hill mangoes known for their aroma and juicy pulp.
Agriculture experts said Dima Hasao has the potential to become a producer of premium naturally ripened mangoes if marketing, branding, grading and transport facilities are improved.
Ayung said government support could help local farmers secure better returns.
“If the government promotes our mangoes like Tezpur’s famous litchis, farmers will earn better prices and consumers will get healthier fruits,” he said.
Agriculture observers said expanding orchards, strengthening farmer cooperatives, improving post-harvest infrastructure and promoting seasonal marketing could help establish Dima Hasao mangoes as a recognised regional brand.
Local teacher Gilbert said, “Natural and local items always have more pleasant smelling and flavourful.”
