Guwahati: The water level of the Kopili river rose sharply after seven gates of the Khandong dam in Umrangso in Dima Hasao district were opened, prompting authorities to issue alerts for residents living along the riverbanks and in low-lying areas.
According to the Central Water Commission’s hydrological data as of 8 pm on Monday, the river was flowing at 59.55 metres against the danger level of 60.50 metres. The highest flood level recorded for the river is 62.20 metres, attained on June 18, 2022.
Reports from downstream areas indicate that foamy and fast-flowing waters were being witnessed at several stretches of the river following increased discharge from the reservoir.
The gates of the Khandong dam were opened on Sunday after continuous rainfall caused a significant rise in reservoir levels, leading to increased flow downstream.
Meanwhile, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) has issued advisories to district administrations in 18 districts of Assam, asking them to alert residents living near the river and in vulnerable low-lying areas.
Authorities have advised people to avoid entering the river and to remain vigilant. District administrations are monitoring the situation and coordinating with concerned agencies to prevent any untoward incidents.
