Guwahati: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has stated that its mandate is strictly limited to providing healthcare services and that it has no involvement in the transportation of patients or the deployment of security personnel, following unrest at the hospital over the treatment of three injured youths.

The clarification comes after protests erupted within the hospital premises on Monday, triggered by allegations from demonstrators that three patients receiving treatment were militants. The situation escalated into a confrontation, prompting security forces to use tear gas and carry out a baton charge to disperse the crowd.

According to reports, the three injured individuals, belonging to the Kuki community, were initially treated at the 183 Military Hospital in Leimakhong before being referred to RIMS for further medical attention. They were transported to the institute by security forces.

In an official statement, RIMS stressed that decisions related to the transfer of patients and security arrangements fall under the jurisdiction of the relevant authorities. The institute said its responsibility begins only when patients arrive at the hospital for treatment.

Emphasising its commitment to medical ethics and humanitarian principles, RIMS said healthcare services are provided to all patients irrespective of their background or circumstances. The institute reiterated that its duty is to ensure medical care for those brought to its facilities.

The hospital administration also appealed for restraint, warning that disruptions within the campus could hinder treatment and jeopardise the wellbeing of critically ill patients and those requiring emergency care.

In a separate statement released on Tuesday, RIMS condemned the use of mock bombs and smoke bombs inside the hospital complex during the protest, describing the incident as a serious threat to the functioning of a healthcare institution and the safety of patients, attendants and medical staff.

The demonstrations reportedly centred on concerns regarding the security cover provided to the injured youths, with some protesters drawing comparisons to movement restrictions faced by civilians in Kuki-dominated areas of Kangpokpi district.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as investigations and security assessments remain underway around the hospital campus.
