Guwahati: The Tripura government has introduced a five-day work week for its employees, declaring all Saturdays as holidays and revising office timings across state government departments. The move, announced through a notification issued by the General Administration Department, is aimed at improving employee welfare while ensuring uninterrupted delivery of public services.
Under the new arrangement, government departments will remain open from Monday to Friday, with working hours fixed from 9 am to 5 pm. As a result, Saturdays will now be observed as weekly holidays across state government establishments.
The decision marks a departure from the previous schedule, under which offices operated between 10 am and 5 pm and only the second and fourth Saturdays were designated as holidays.
Officials said the revised timetable has been designed to ensure that public services and administrative functions continue without disruption. The additional hour added to the daily work schedule is expected to offset the loss of working hours arising from the closure of offices on Saturdays.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the reform reflects the government’s effort to create a more balanced and employee-friendly work environment while maintaining effective governance. He noted that adequate time for rest, family responsibilities and personal pursuits can contribute positively to an employee’s overall well-being and job performance.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative is in line with modern workplace practices adopted by several government institutions across the country, including departments under the Central Government. He added that employees who travel long distances to reach their workplaces are likely to benefit considerably from the revised arrangement.
The government believes that a structured five-day work week will help improve workplace motivation, strengthen productivity and encourage a healthier balance between professional commitments and personal life.
The announcement has received a positive response from many employees, who view the measure as a welcome step toward reducing stress and creating more opportunities for family engagement and social activities.
The revised office schedule has come into force with immediate effect, ushering in a new chapter in Tripura‘s administrative framework focused on both efficiency and employee welfare.
