Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated its former Manipur unit president Adhikarimayum (A.) Sarda Devi as its candidate for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election from the state. She officially submitted her nomination papers on June 8 at the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
The nomination was filed before the Returning Officer in the presence of Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh, along with several BJP MLAs and senior leaders who accompanied her during the process.
Sarda Deviโs candidature is being seen as significant within the party, as she holds the distinction of being the first woman to have served as the BJPโs state president in Manipur. Her selection also positions her for a potential entry into the Upper House of Parliament.
According to the Election Commission schedule, June 8 was the final date for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha seat from Manipur. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on June 9, while withdrawals will be permitted until June 11.
If required, polling will be conducted on June 18 between 9 am and 4 pm, followed by counting of votes at 5 pm the same day.
Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled on the same day across multiple states, including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Rajasthan.
With the BJP enjoying a clear numerical advantage in the Manipur Assembly, the party is widely expected to retain the seat comfortably.
