Guwahati: The high-profile case concerning the death of Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg is poised to enter a significant stage, with the Special Fast-Track Court scheduled to begin recording witness testimonies from June 8.
As part of the trial proceedings, the court has summoned four witnesses to record their statements on the first day. The witness examination is expected to continue until June 20, with four witnesses likely to be examined each day.
The case relates to the death of Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Following an investigation, the matter was treated as an alleged case of murder and criminal conspiracy, leading to a wider probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The investigation resulted in the arrest of festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and the singer’s former manager Siddharth Sharma from New Delhi in October 2025. Both were later brought to Guwahati and remanded to judicial custody as the SIT expanded its investigation.
According to investigators, lookout notices had been issued against Mahanta and Sharma before their arrest. Authorities had also alleged that Mahanta remained in Singapore for a period following the singer’s death.
In the course of the investigation, several others were arrested, including Amritprabha Mahanta, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Sandipan Garg and Zubeen Garg’s bodyguards Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya. All the accused are currently facing trial before the Fast-Track Court.
The commencement of witness testimony is expected to mark a significant phase in the case, as the court begins hearing evidence and statements presented by the prosecution. Given Zubeen Garg’s immense popularity and contribution to Assamese music, cinema and culture, the proceedings continue to draw widespread public attention across the state.
