Imphal: Two passengers bound for Kolkata were arrested at Imphal airport after security personnel recovered 4.09 kg of suspected heroin from their luggage during a screening operation, officials said.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) intercepted the duo during a security check at the airport and seized the contraband, suspected to be heroin.

The arrested individuals were identified as Syed Sabir Ali (26) and Khutheibam Sabir Ahmed (24), both residents of Kiyamgei Oinam Loukon in Imphal East district.

According to police, the two men were intercepted during baggage screening while attempting to board a Kolkata-bound flight.

The seized heroin is estimated to be worth at around Rs 4.8 crore in the international illicit market, police said.

Following the seizure, the accused were handed over to the concerned authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigators are also attempting to trace the source of the drugs and identify others linked to the network, police said.
