Guwahati: Alleging large-scale corruption in funds meant for the welfare of the indigenous Chutia community, Kundil Sena staged a protest in Jorhat on Tuesday demanding a probe into an alleged Rs 125-crore scam linked to the Chutia Development Council (CDC)

More than 100 members of the organisation, including women, took part in the demonstration, raising slogans such as โ€œWe want justiceโ€, โ€œDissolve the Development Councilโ€ and โ€œCDC Go Backโ€.

The protesters alleged that the council, constituted in 2020 for the development of the Chutia community, failed to deliver meaningful benefits despite receiving Rs 125 crore over the past five years.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, the organisation alleged that the annual allocation of Rs 25 crore did not reach genuine beneficiaries.

โ€œOnly a handful of leaders and their close associates allegedly benefited from the funds,โ€ the memorandum stated.

The organisation further alleged that money earmarked for community welfare was diverted to โ€œunnecessary schemesโ€.

Demanding a Chief Minister’s Vigilance and Anti-Corruption probe into the alleged irregularities, the protesters also sought dissolution of the existing council and action against those found guilty.

โ€œThe council has crossed all limits of irregularities and corruption in the name of implementing various schemes,โ€ the memorandum alleged.

Speaking during the protest, a member of Kundil Sena challenged council members and government officials to publicly explain how the funds had been utilised if the allegations are untrue.

The organisation also demanded formation of a new council with fresh community representatives and preparation of an official map of the ancient Chutia Kingdom by the State Archaeology Department.

Warning of intensified agitation if its demands were ignored, Kundil Sena announced district-level consultation meetings and signature campaigns from June 6, followed by an indefinite hunger strike from June 21.
