Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the stateโs Council of Ministers will be expanded on June 5, 2026, putting an end to growing speculation over a reshuffle in the newly formed NDA government.
In a post on X, Sarma confirmed the date, stating, โI am pleased to inform that the Council of Ministers of the Government of Assam will be expanded on 5 June 2026.โ
The expansion comes less than a month after Sarma began his second consecutive term as Chief Minister following the NDAโs decisive win in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Earlier, he had indicated that the cabinet expansion would be undertaken after the Assembly session and within the first week of June.
The present ministry was sworn in on May 12, initially including Sarma and a limited number of ministers. Since then, several key departments have remained directly under the Chief Minister, leading to expectations of a wider cabinet reshuffle and inclusion of new ministers.
Political circles are now anticipating that the expansion may bring in a mix of senior leaders and fresh faces from the BJP and its alliance partners. However, no official list of probable inductees has been released.
Prior to the formation of the new government, Sarma had suggested that the cabinet strength could eventually reach around 18 to 19 ministers, depending on party consultations and organisational considerations.
The upcoming expansion is expected to complete the structure of the NDA 3.0 government in Assam, enabling it to fully focus on its governance priorities and development agenda for the next five years.
