Guwahati: Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) on Saturday announced the temporary suspension of the total shutdown that had been imposed across Kuki-Zo inhabited districts following a series of discussions with government representatives over the past two days.
The decision was taken after consecutive rounds of consultations held on May 29 and 30 between KIM, Joint Kuki-Zo Civil Society Organisations, various Tribe Inpis and student bodies, and the government regarding issues affecting the Kuki-Zo community.
In a statement, KIM said the suspension of the shutdown would take effect immediately and was being implemented as a goodwill gesture aimed at facilitating administrative processes and allowing the government time to address the concerns raised by the community.
The organisation stated that the move reflected its commitment to maintaining peace and law and order while creating space for the government to take meaningful steps toward ensuring justice and resolving issues faced by the Kuki-Zo people.
However, KIM clarified that the temporary relaxation of the shutdown should not be interpreted as a compromise on its demands or a weakening of its position. It maintained that the decision was taken in good faith with the expectation that the government would respond with concrete action.
The organisation said the Kuki-Zo community had demonstrated patience, restraint and cooperation despite enduring prolonged hardships and injustices. It expressed hope that the authorities would reciprocate the gesture through sincere efforts and accountability.
At the same time, KIM warned that any delay, negligence or failure by the government to take visible and meaningful action during the suspension period could lead to a renewed and intensified phase of shutdowns and democratic protests.
According to the organisation, responsibility for any such escalation would rest with the government if it failed to address the community’s concerns and safeguard its rights and interests.
KIM also thanked members of the Kuki-Zo community for maintaining unity, discipline and solidarity throughout the shutdown period. It reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the movement until justice, security and long-term safeguards for the community are secured.
