Aizawl: Veteran journalist and Champhai District Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA) President Lalhlupuia passed away on Friday after battling cancer. He was 65.
According to family sources, Lalhlupuia breathed his last at around 7:30 am at his residence in Champhai.
Widely respected in Mizoram’s media fraternity, Lalhlupuia was the editor of a local vernacular daily, “Lenrual,” and also served as a correspondent for All India Radio (AIR), Aizawl, from Champhai.
Known for his dedication to journalism and public service, he played an active role in strengthening media outreach and community engagement in Champhai district.
At the time of his death, he was serving as the president of the Champhai unit of the MJA, the umbrella scribe body in Mizoram.
In a condolence message, the MJA described his death as a huge loss to the journalism community.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of such a valued person. His loss will be greatly felt,” the association stated.
Beyond his prolific career in journalism, Lalhlupuia was a deeply influential community leader who dedicated decades to public service.
A former Village Council President (VCP) and long-time leader of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) in Champhai Venglai, he also played leadership and advisory roles in numerous organisations, including the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (Women’s association) and Mizo Zaimi Insuihkhawm Pawl (Singers’ association).
Meanwhile, several leaders, including Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K. Sapdanga, mourned the demise of the senior journalist.
Recalling Lalhlupuia’s contribution, Lalduhoma said he played an important role in disseminating information, strengthening ties between the government and the people, and highlighting issues and developments from Champhai district.
“He was deeply dedicated to his profession and someone worthy of admiration. His passing is a great loss for Mizoram,” Lalduhoma said in a Facebook post.
He further described the journalist as a pleasant companion, a thoughtful speaker and writer, someone always willing to help others, and a valuable member of society.
Sapdanga also mourned the veteran journalist’s death, calling it a major loss for both Mizoram and the MJA.
The journalist-turned-politician, who formerly headed the MJA, said that Lalhlupuia’s contributions to journalism and society would always be remembered.
